27 up. 27 down. That was the case for New York Yankees pitcher Domingo Germán Wednesday night in Oakland, as he pitched the 24th perfect game in Major League Baseball history. It was the first perfecto since 2012, when Félix Hernández threw a gem in Seattle.

Before Wednesday’s game, Germán wasn’t doing too well this season. He had a 5.00 ERA and was 4-5. Not to mention, he gave up ten runs in his last start. But on Wednesday night, he entered baseball immortality while striking out nine on only 99 pitches, which is almost unheard of for any game in nine innings, let alone a perfect game.

However, this was an emotional game for Germán. His uncle passed away just a couple of days before his legendary start. He revealed this after his gem, stating through his interpreter. “I had him with me throughout the whole game…This game is a tribute to him,” Germán said.

Throughout this game, Germán blanked the Athletics across their scoreboard. The last time the A’s had a perfect game pitched against them was over a century ago, when the team, now in Oakland, played in Philadelphia.
