Bobby Miller, who the Dodgers selected in the first round of the 2020 Major League Baseball draft, was recently called up and showed an immediate impact. Yes, the Dodgers have had setbacks with injuries recently, especially with starting pitching. However, the 24-year-old phenom has shown he is going nowhere but staying with the big club. In three starts so far, Miller has pitched to a 2-0 record, a 1.06 ERA, 16 strikeouts, a 0.765 WHIP, and has allowed two earned runs–all of those numbers come in 17 innings pitched.
With veterans Dustin May and Julio Urías sidelined and recent call-up Gavin Stone also hurt, Miller will be in the major league team’s rotation for a while. However, when May and Urías return, Miller should remain a part of the rotation. While Urías is a proven starter, Miller has been much more effective than May has been–Manager Dave Roberts should consider moving someone like May or Tony Gonsolin to the bullpen in a long reliever-type role.
Bobby Miller could be a Stephen Strasburg-esque type of pitcher. Both developed significantly in college and started their careers strongly. Strasburg, of course, has battled several injuries and still is. Early in their careers, Miller and Strasburg have shown that they can throw the heat at over 100 miles an hour.
Like Strasburg, Miller was also a first-round pick and showed great early potential. If Miller is like Strasburg and healthier, the 2020 first-round pick will help the Dodgers in the long run.
